The 2011 Purdue United Way Campaign aims to raise $740,000 for Greater Lafayette agencies beginning with its kickoff Tuesday (Sept. 13).

The campaign, which runs through Nov. 16, will kick off at noon Sept. 13 at Beck Agricultural Center, 4540 U.S. 52 West. By making donations and participating in organized activities throughout the campaign, Purdue employees can show their support for the local community.

"Thanks to the leadership givers, called 'Vanguards,' who allow a portion of their donation to be used for overhead expenses at the local United Way office, every penny that Purdue employees give is channeled to partner agencies working in our community," says Al Diaz, 2011 Purdue United Way chair and executive vice president for business and finance, treasurer. "Your donations directly assist programs that help children succeed, help individuals secure jobs and stable housing, and strengthen families and neighborhoods."

"As a part of Purdue, you can have an impact on one out of every three people in the community, making their lives safer and happier."

"Growing our Future, Living United" is the theme for this year's Purdue campaign. Purdue's goal of $740,000 is a significant percentage of the community's goal of $4.6 million.

Pledge cards will be delivered to the team captains of each department during the week of Sept. 13, and campus employees will receive them soon after. The pledge cards should be returned to the team captains or sent directly to Dauch Alumni Center in the envelope included. All donations will go to the 23 partner agencies that serve the communities of Lafayette and West Lafayette and many of the surrounding counties. Faculty and staff can designate their gifts to other counties or a particular United Way agency or agencies.

United Way of Greater Lafayette has channeled over $110 million into the community since 1923. Today, its 23 local agencies include the American Red Cross, Food Finders Food Bank, Lafayette Family YMCA and Riggs Community Health Center.
