Sessions to focus on Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA Amendments Act

The Office of Institutional Equity at Purdue will offer several sessions through September from the 2009-10 ADA Audio Conference, Legal Issues Webinar, and Accessible Technology Webinar series presented by the Great Lakes ADA Center.
   
These sessions are designed to offer advanced information on the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ADA Amendments Act as building blocks to an individual's existing foundation of basic ADA knowledge. The real-time captioned subject-specific sessions are 90 minutes long with interactive opportunity for questions and answers.

ADA Audio Conference – Disability Statistics: What Do They Tell Us?
   
Frequently asked questions about disability statistics will be answered during this session. It will explore the various sources of statistics related to disability, how to use and interpret disability statistics, and what can be expected from the 2010 U.S. Census regarding disability.

Accessible Technology Webinar – Return on Investment: The Business Case for Accessibility
   
This session will discuss the myths surrounding accessibility and demonstrate how accessibility benefits a wide range of people. Participants will be able to make a business case for the investment of accessibility.

ADA Audio Conference – ADA Update: 20th Anniversary of the ADA

Representatives of federal agencies will present an update on their litigation, technical assistance and enforcement efforts over the past year, including highlights of accomplishments over the past 20 years. Participants will be able to ask questions regarding issues in their own workplace or community.

Legal Issues Webinar – The EEOC and the ADA
   
Employers and people with disabilities frequently have questions about the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s role in interpreting and enforcing Title I of the ADA. This webinar will provide participants with a clear understanding of the EEOC administrative process, including work share agreements, mediation, investigations, case selection, and an update on the EEOC ADA litigation.

ADA Audio Conference – ADA and After School and Day Care Programs for Children with Disabilities
   
Parents of children with disabilities are often faced with limited choices when it comes to locating appropriate after school and daycare programs to meet their children's needs. During this session speakers will discuss the best practices in day care and after school programs for serving children with disabilities and resources that are available to assist providers and parents.

Accessible Technology Webinar – Creating Accessible Videos for Your Website
   
Video has become a common means of sharing information about everyday activities and events, but the technology remains largely inaccessible to people with sensory impairments. This session will review the key features of accessible videos, steps to consider when planning and developing accessible video content and a demonstration on how accessible videos can be used.

ADA Audio Conference – Corrections and the ADA: Balancing the Rights of People with Disabilities While Incarcerated
   
Studies show that a large number of individuals within the prison system are people with disabilities. This session will explore the strides that have been made and strategies implemented within the corrections community to address the rights of individuals with disabilities while retaining its focus on imposing punishment.

Legal Issues Webinar – Litigation under the ADA Amendments Act
   
The passage of the ADA Amendments Act sought to change the narrow interpretations by courts of the definition of disability, but the real impact of ADAAA remains vague. This session will analyze the initial case decisions interpreting the provisions of the ADAAA and its regulations, and identify any emerging trends.
