Sessions to be held for Phase II of the Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Briefing Initiative

March 2, 2010

The Office of Institutional Equity and Human Resource Services announce the launch of Phase II of the Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Briefing Initiative.

The Americans with Disabilities Act and the ADA Amendments Act session represents Phase II of the Equal Access/Equal Opportunity Briefing Initiative started at Purdue three years ago.

Phase II focuses on the area of disabilities for two reasons. The first is due to the changes to the law brought about in 2009 that affect employers such as Purdue. The second reason is the increased number of individuals with disabilities in the work force. Purdue wants to ensure that all faculty and staff are treated equitably and respectfully.

Due to the changes in the area of disabilities, there is a session specific to supervisors and a session for faculty and staff who do not have supervisory responsibilities. All faculty and staff at the University are encouraged to attend the session appropriate to them as a supervisor or a person without supervisory responsibility.

The disabilities briefing session shares with participants the changes the ADA Amendments Act makes to the Americans with Disabilities Act and how it will affect employment. The session is designed to provide participants with a better understanding of the area of disabilities, our responsibilities as supervisors and employees at Purdue, a greater understanding of how to interact with people with disabilities, and campus resources that can assist supervisors and employees with questions about disabilities. Other topics that will be discussed are the reasonable accommodation process, discrimination and harassment, confidentiality, drug and alcohol use, and performance and conduct standards.

The Access Purdue brochure and resource guide will be provided to every participant. This session is very interactive with discussion points, scenarios, and many opportunities to ask questions.
