Update: Traffic, parking disruptions

Here are notes on some current and upcoming disruptions on or near the West Lafayette campus.

This information draws on Physical Facilities' online reports. A summary of construction, including maps, is at https://www.purdue.edu/physicalfacilities/construction_notices.html with links to individual construction notices. Physical Facilities updates this information regularly and recommends not relying on information more than two weeks old. Weather conditions and other factors play a significant role in progress on projects.

NEW LOCAL

U.S. 52 lane closures near McCormick Road. Beginning today (June 10) or soon, the U.S. 231 bypass project by the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will close the passing lane (left lane) in both directions on U.S. 52 between Klondike Road and Hadley Lane (east of McCormick Road). The closure is for the contractor to install a center curb on U.S. 52. Once the center curb is installed, the access to County Road 250 West and McCormick Road will be a right-in and right-out only. The traffic signal at this intersection will be turned off and stop signs will be installed on these two county roads at U.S. 52. The lane closures for this work are expected to last about one week. GENERAL CAMPUS

Stadium Parking (Lot R). The northern seven rows of the Stadium Parking (Lot R) have closed, and the southern seven rows have reopened.

Closure on David Ross Road. A water line will be installed at the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, 851 David Ross Road. The road will have a detour in place Tuesday through Saturday (June 11-15) to route traffic through the adjacent "U"-shaped driveway.

REMINDERS

South University Street. A multiphase water line replacement project continues between State Street and Harrison Street. Though the project will affect areas along South University Street differently during different phases, through traffic between State and Harrison is not possible.

John R. Wooden Drive, Tower Drive. In conjunction with a tunnel project at Stadium Mall north to Tower Drive through early August, John R. Wooden Drive is closed between Stadium Avenue and Tower Drive. Tower Drive is temporarily a two-way street between Russell Street and Wooden Drive.

Northwestern Avenue: Northbound lane restriction adjacent to Wang Hall (across from Physics Building). The construction of Wang Hall will necessitate the intermittent closure of the easternmost northbound lane adjacent to the construction site. Motorists are advised to be extra alert in the area. Construction is to be completed in early 2014.

Northwestern Avenue: Northbound lane restriction near Mackey Arena. The construction of a new building known as 720 Northwestern Avenue at the corner of Evergreen and Northwestern Avenue (across from Mackey Arena) will reduce northbound Northwestern Avenue to one lane in front of the construction site.

Northwestern Avenue and existing U.S. 231: Various utility projects will disrupt Northwestern at times from the ramps north of the Yeager Road roundabout south to the Village. Motorists should be alert to crews and lane restrictions throughout the length of Northwestern Avenue. Also, INDOT repair and resurfacing on U.S. 231 extends onto Fowler, Wiggins and River Road.

U.S. 231 bypass. The new bypass section of U.S. 231 still is under construction, and until INDOT has all required measures in place, the new section of roadway will remain closed. INDOT urges individuals to stay off the closed road for their own safety. Barricades are in place and should be obeyed. Purdue police will be enforcing this closure, and individuals found on the closed section of roadway are subject to arrest for trespassing. The project completion date is September.

Roundabout use. Visitors to the campus and area who are not familiar with roundabouts, especially ones with multiple lanes, may wish to view the diagrams of traffic flow for the new roundabout at Northwestern Avenue and Yeager Road. The City of West Lafayette has posted these diagrams at www.westlafayette.in.gov/department/division.php?fDD=5-188 along with other facts about roundabouts.
