Purdue participates in Statewide Service Event
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University, in coordination with several other Mortar Board chapters across the state, will participate in the first annual Statewide Service Event.
About 40 Mortar Board members from Purdue, Indiana, Butler and Ball State universities, along with Hanover College, will come together Saturday (March 26) in Indianapolis for a day of service, collaboration, and networking.
The Statewide Service Event will fulfill one of the three pillars that Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society is built on: service. The idea for this event was created during the National Mortar Board Conference in the summer of 2010.
Service will include time at Wheeler Missions, Second Helping soup kitchen, and several other possibilities including creating tie blankets for Riley Children’s Hospital and serving at a children’s center.
Mortar Board members are selected for their achievements in scholarship, leadership, and service to the university community. It is the first national organization to honor senior college women. The Purdue chapter of Mortar Board was chartered in 1926. The society admitted men after 1975. The Barbara Cook chapter of Mortar Board is named to honor retired Dean of Students Barbara Cook, who advised the group from 1956-1986.
