Tri-state conference to focus on dairy nutrition management
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Dairy nutrition specialists and producers have an opportunity to learn about a wide array of industry issues and new research at the 2010 Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference on April 20 and 21 at the Grand Wayne Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The conference, which is a partnership among Purdue University, Michigan State University and Ohio State University, will offer both producers and nutritionists practical information that can be incorporated into nutrition businesses as well as on-farm.
"The dairy industry has been facing big challenges because of the low milk prices," said Tamilee Nennich, Purdue dairy nutrition specialist. "Some of the conference sessions will focus on balancing diets and which nutrients really are needed to help animal health and performance. We'll also cover feed management and the types of ration changes that occurred this year because of the low milk prices."
Other hot topics will include molds and mycotoxins, animal welfare and the way feeding animals affects air quality measures.
Conference sessions are broken down into themes, which include:
* Nutrition and Animal Health, with talks by Chuck Schwab of the University of New Hampshire, Rick Grant of the William H. Minor Agricultural Institute, Adam Lock of Michigan State University, Ralph Ward of Cumberland Valley Analytical Services, Candace Croney of Ohio State University and Jan Shearer of Iowa State University.
* Heifer Management, with talks by Kristy Daniels of Ohio State University and Alex Bach of IRTA in Spain.
* Feeding Program Management, with talks by Ken Bolton of the University of Wisconsin, Jeffrey Firkins and Bernard Ervin of Ohio State University, Kenneth McGuffey of McGuffey Dairy Consulting, and Santiago Utsumi and Wendy Powers of Michigan State University.
"The themes for this year's conference were chosen to highlight industry issues about which nutritionists and producers expressed the most need for information," Nennich said.
Registration is $165 per person, which includes refreshments, one breakfast, a hospitality reception and a copy of the conference proceedings. The Grand Wayne Center is located at 120 W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne. Rooms have been blocked for participants at both the Hilton Fort Wayne at the Grand Wayne Center and the Fort Wayne Hotel and Conference center.
