Specialty food workshop to give participants a taste of industry
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 2010 Purdue University Specialty Food Business Workshop will offer a wide range of information to help participants successfully start a food business.
The workshop will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 15 at Indiana Farm Bureau, 225 S. East St.,
"It is open to anyone who is interested in starting a specialty or ingredients food business," said Maria Marshall, a Purdue agricultural economist.
Workshop topics include product and process development, packaging, organic products, food regulations, food safety, business planning, and marketing. The workshop also includes a session with a successful food entrepreneur.
"The Indiana State Department of Health will cover the food regulations portion of the program," Marshall said. "They will give advice on regulations with retail and wholesale trade and cover the requirements of getting a permit."
Marketing is one of the most important parts of the business, Marshall said.
"I will be speaking about proper marketing techniques and the importance of marketing," she said. "One of the most important pieces of advice is making sure specialty food business owners know who their target market is."
The food safety portion of the workshop will highlight the importance of knowing what ingredients are in a product.
Registration is due by April 9 and is $100 per participant. It includes a binder of workshop-related information, lunch and refreshments.
