— Michael Bruno and Chris Yamamoto, sophomores in the College of Engineering, will compete in the Red Bull Flugtag USA event on July 10 in Miami. The Red Bull Flugtag (German for "Flying Day") challenges participants to build and pilot a homemade flying machine off of a 30-foot high flight deck. Along with flight distance, participants are judged on creativity and showmanship. Bruno will pilot the aircraft that was crafted to look like the Boilermaker Xtra Special. Another Purdue student, James Gilbertson, helped work on the craft, and other team members include Zach Priester, Jessica Hockham and Matt Gemmel. Purdue is only one of four colleges with a team competing in Miami. The Flugtag event started in Austria in 1991 and since that time, more than 80 Flugtags have been held around the world.
