Camp Calcium invites former campers to celebrate 20th year

June 13, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's program that has played a key role in understanding calcium and its function in bone health is inviting more than 400 previous Camp Calcium student participants and workers to a 20th reunion this summer.

"The research conducted at this camp has been crucial to setting calcium requirements and dietary guidelines for teens," said Connie Weaver, distinguished professor and head of foods and nutrition. "The camp also offers a fun academic experience for teenagers to live on a college campus and learn more about science and nutrition. We are celebrating 20 years of work and research this summer."

The reunion is noon to 4 p.m. June 25 in Lafayette, Ind. Former campers or workers who want more information or to RSVP can contact camp director Berdine Martin at campcalc@purdue.edu

Eleven camps have been held during the past 20 years with 381 campers and dozens of counselors and research associates. During camp, girls, ages 12-14, and boys, ages 13-15, lived in a Purdue residence hall, followed a controlled meal plan and participated in lab analyses. Daily activities were planned for the campers, including fitness and art, as well as information about attending college and pursuing careers. Camps lasted from three to six weeks, and campers received a daily stipend for their participation.
