Purdue's first Friday Night Fashion event to support cancer research center

October 4, 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's first Friday Night Fashion event will hit the runway Oct. 15 during Homecoming weekend as part of a benefit to support the Purdue Center for Cancer Research.

The first-time fashion show will begin at 6:15 p.m. on the Homecoming stage under the Purdue Arch off of Stadium Avenue prior to the Purdue Homecoming Parade, which begins at 8 p.m.

Friday Night Fashion show models will include cancer survivors; Purdue faculty, staff and students; and local celebrities such as Sally Hope, Boilermaker head football coach Danny Hope's wife. Also appearing will be Gold & Black's Alan Karpick and WLFI-TV personality Laura Kirtley.

The fashion show will feature new Purdue fashions from Original Retro Brand, Campus Couture, J-America, Champion and For Bare Feet - all sold at University Spirit. All brands featured in the show will be available for purchase, with 20 percent of the proceeds going to benefit the Purdue Center for Cancer Research. The silent auction will feature a variety of Purdue collectables and fashion, and all proceeds will benefit the center.

"We are excited to partner with University Spirit, Purdue Licensing and the Purdue community to showcase a fun event for a very serious cause," says Elizabeth Steurer, the cancer research center's director of donor relations. "Our researchers are among the best in the world and are coming up with new cancer detection devices, innovative ideas on prevention and unlocking secrets about cancer each day. Our mission is discovery, and our goal is to cure cancer. We invite and welcome everyone to join us in the fight and to enjoy Friday Night Fashion this Homecoming Weekend."

Friday Night Fashion's festivities begin at the Homecoming stage at 3 p.m. with a tent sale and silent auction and autograph sessions starting at 3:30 p.m. Free food from Bruno's will be available while supplies last. All events are open to the public.

Former Purdue quarterback Jim Everett and modern mixed martial arts fighter Sean McCorkle will be signing autographs at 5 p.m. McCorkle also will be appearing in the latest Purdue apparel in the show.

All autographs cost $10 each and can be purchased prior to the event at University Spirit in Chauncey Hill. The Center for Cancer Research and the 12th Boiler Scholarship Program will share proceeds from the autograph session.
