Bement, Wereley to headline undergrad research symposium
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Arden Bement Jr., director of Purdue University's Global Policy Research Institute, and Steven Wereley, a mechanical engineering professor, will speak during a symposium capping the 2010 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program.
The research symposium will be held Aug. 3 and 4.
Bement, former director of the National Science Foundation, will give the opening address at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 3 in Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering, Room G140. He'll talk about his vision of research in the next decade.
Wereley, who has become nationally recognized for his work in estimating the flow of oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, will speak at 1:40 p.m. Aug. 4 in Armstrong Hall, Room 1010. He will discuss "Measuring Disaster: The Magnitude of the BP Oil Spill."
The SURF program provides undergraduate students across all engineering, science and technology disciplines with an intensive, interdisciplinary research experience, allowing them to work closely with graduate students and professors.
Involved in the program this summer are 170 students from Purdue engineering, agriculture and science disciplines; 109 professors; and 130 graduate student mentors. Also attending are 28 visiting undergraduate students from 20 universities, including two from international institutions.
Research areas are biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering, civil engineering, computational research, engineering education, experimental technologies, heat transfer and combustion, material science, mechanics, modeling, nanotechnology, nuclear engineering, sensing technologies, and signal processing and networking.
During the symposium, which will run from 12:30-5:30 p.m. both days, SURF participants will give presentations on their summer research work.
All symposium sessions are free and open to the public. A complete agenda with times and locations is available at http://www.purdue.edu/surf/Participants/Summer/Events/RequiredMeetings/Symposium2010
