Trustees approve academic appointments, elect corporate secretary
INDIANAPOLIS - The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (April 8) ratified appointments to two named professorships during its meeting at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
The trustees also elected a corporate secretary for the board and ratified the appointment of a new chancellor at Purdue University Calumet.
The board approved the appointments of James E. Braun as the Herrick Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Qingyan (Yan) Chen as the Reilly Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
James E. Braun
Braun is a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering. He has worked in both academic and industrial settings in the air conditioning and refrigeration field for more than 30 years and has received four patents.
His research combines the uses of computer modeling, optimization and experiments to study and improve the performance of thermal systems. He is a fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and has received several awards from the group, including its Distinguished Service Award, the E.K. Campbell Award of Merit and the Early Achievement Award. He has published more than 200 journal and conference papers, receiving six best paper awards.
Braun received his bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin.
Chen, a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering since 2002, also is editor-in-chief of Building and Environment, an international journal.
His current research interests include indoor environment, aircraft cabin environment, and energy-efficient and sustainable building design and analysis.
Chen has published two books and more than 200 journal and conference papers. He has received the Distinguished and Exceptional Service Award from ASHRAE and the Career Award from the National Science Foundation. He is a fellow of ASHRAE and International Society of Indoor Air Quality.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University and his master's and doctoral degrees from Delft University of Technology.
The board elected Janice Beard as its new corporate secretary. Beard comes to the board from the Purdue College of Technology, where she was administrative assistant to the dean. She has been at Purdue for 10 years, previously serving as administrative assistant to the vice president for human relations. She replaces Roseanna Behringer, who is retiring. Behringer has worked in the trustees' office since 1984 and has been the corporate secretary since 2002.
The trustees also ratified the appointment of Thomas L. Keon as chancellor of Purdue University Calumet. Keon, who will succeed Howard Cohen as chancellor on July 1, is dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida.
