Originally, full-size images in the research section were placed directly on the page between the topic summary and the publications. Thumbnails that linked to a separate slideshow replaced this layout in order to: 1) reduce loading time; 2) minimize scrolling; and 3) provide expandibility for future images. Slideshow
The original slideshow displayed a set height for the area containing the images; if the images were larger than the area, a scrollbar automatically appeared. The advantage of this design is that both the textual information and the navigation bar remained visible at all times. The disadvantage is that the image area scaled horizontally but not vertically according to the browser window, thereby reducing user control. View a slide in the original format. (posted on 08.25.04)
