Dr. Jane Zimmer Daniels, A Legacy Leader for Women in Engineering

Dr. Jane Zimmer Daniels was the first Director of the Women In Engineering Program (WIEP), founded at Purdue University under her tutelage! Her work has affected thousands of women within the US and abroad. Jane directed WIEP for more than 20 years, initiating pre-college, retention, and faculty programs, that are still successful in providing women with the best opportunities to reach their full potential as engineering students.

During Jane’s work at Purdue, she founded the Women in Engineering Programs and Advocates Network (WEPAN) and became its first President. She took a year’s leave, in 1993-1994, to direct the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) first grant program focused on gender equity. When she left Purdue, in 2001, to begin her work with the Henry Luce Foundation, Jane was named Director Emeritus of WIEP.

Jane has received many tributes for her work on behalf of women in engineering and science including: the Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award from Purdue Mortar Board; the Vincent Bendix Minorities in Engineering Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE); the "Special Boilermaker" Award from the Purdue Alumni Association; and most recently the Distinguished Service Award from the national Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She was also named a Woman of Achievement by the Lafayette YWCA; and, in 2006, joined Leah Jamison in the inaugural class of Purdue’s Women Pioneers. In 2009, Jane was named a Distinguished Alumna by the College of Education at Purdue.

Jane has been a consultant to colleges and universities, industry, and government, in the areas of gender equity, organizational effectiveness, and philanthropy. She is author and editor of more than 60 articles and chapters in books and speaks regularly to national and international audiences. Jane is a fellow in both SWE and the Association of Women in Science.
