Learning Community Frequently Asked Questions
Results here at Purdue have shown that:
- Learning community students have higher semester and cumulative grade indexes.
- Learning community participants have higher cumulative retention rates than non-learning community participants - nearly 5% percent higher.
- Learning community participants graduate at higher and faster rates than non-learning community participants
- Learning community students report an increase in class preparation time, more enjoyment with studying, and an increase in both time spent in and enjoyment of student collaboration on projects.
In addition, instructors have shared that students in learning communities tend to be more interactive and less inhibited because they know each other and feel more comfortable participating in class.

Is there a cost associated with learning communities?
Can a student take just one of the courses associated with a learning community?
No. The benefit of a learning community is the opportunity for a student to take a number of courses with the same group of students.
What if I want to register a non-learning community student in a learning community course section?
In most cases, LC course sections will have limits set to zero and/or require overrides. Additionally, LC participants are most often pre-registered for associated courses prior to STAR, or registered by Student Success at Purduestaff if they add the LC during STAR. However, we will periodically check learning community course sections and reroute students that are not part of the learning community. It is unfortunate for non-learning community students to go to their first class and find out that they will need to change courses because they were enrolled in a learning community course. In some learning communities, there may still be room available. We continue to work with placement adjustments throughout STAR. Contact Jim Pukrop at 40969 to see if there is space available in any or all of the learning communities in which your student is interested.
What if there is not room in a learning community in which a student would like to participate?
In this situation, we encourage you to contact Jim Pukrop at 40969 to place your student on a waiting list. Sometimes, students who have been accepted into a learning community end up not being able to participate, which creates vacancies.
In some cases, activities are required as they are connected with in-class coursework, such as attending a play and reflecting on it in a paper. Others may be purely social, like a pizza party, or even a casual study break with snacks, and your participation in these types of events is voluntary, but strongly encouraged. After all, you are occupying a space that another student wanted but did not get, and to waste the opportunity is disrespectful.
