Steven Beering honored as an ‘Indiana Living Legend’
Steven Beering, Purdue University’s ninth president, has been honored as an Indiana Living Legend by the Indiana Historical Society.
Beering received the honor during the annual Indiana Living Legends Gala at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis in July. The Indiana Historical Society is a private, nonprofit membership organization that annually honors extraordinary Hoosiers for their statewide and national accomplishments in a variety of areas and disciplines.
Beering served as Purdue’s president from 1983 to 2000, and prior to his Purdue appointment, he served as dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the IU Medical Center.
A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Beering subsequently graduated from the Pitt School of Medicine and spent more than 12 years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps. During his military career, he served as an adviser to the U.S. surgeon general in internal medicine and was a medical consultant on the U.S. space program’s early attempts to put humans in orbit.
