El Chisme

Bring your lunch and join the Latino Cultural Center staff for an informal and laid back discussion of topics in the Latinx community. The topics selected are based on our conversations with students and on issues that we may not be able to discuss at home or with our families. You can read from the resources provided, bring in poem or something short to share with the group or just you speak from own lived experiences.
We will provide refreshments and sweets but also feel free to bring your lunch. We will meet the first and third Monday of the Month.

Let’s Talk about Sex

Description: El hanky panky. The birds and the bees. For many in the Latinx community, the opportunity to have “the talk” at home was never an option. This is your chance to have an honest, unfiltered conversation about sex and sexuality.

“Empeorando” la Raza: Colorism in the Latinx Community

Description: It is not frequently talked about how colorism is deeply engraved into the fabric of the Latinx community. Whether it be that one family member who makes that awkward comment about how we are supposed to mejorar la raza or those unconscious biases that we do not even realize we are perpetuating, racism and colorism also happens amongst our own community. Join us as we talk about ways that we can combat this mentality.

I Am Not Your Spicy Latina: Latinx Stereotypes

Description: It seems that everywhere you look, pop culture continues to feed us this idea of what is to be Latina. From physical appearances, accents, and behavior, society tells us it is okay to be Latina…if you fit a certain mold. In this segment of El Chisme, we will talk about these harmful ideals that tell us what Latinas should strive to be like and discuss how we can challenge these toxic norms.

Saliedo del Closet: Latinx Homophobia

Description: In this segment of El Chisme, we will talk about homophobia in the Latinx community and how some in our community continue to enforce toxic gender norms and homophobic attitudes and how that affects the coming out process.
