Embajadores

Mission

The Embajadores aspire to build awareness and understanding of Latino culture through the creation and implementation of dynamic cultural and educational programs. As student leaders and diplomats of the Latino Cultural Center (LCC), each Embajador will acquire extensive leadership skills such as team building, critical thinking, project analysis, and many other skills that address the 21st-century job market and global community through service learning.

What is an Embajador?

Embajadores are:

  • The Service-Learning organization made up of volunteer students/ambassadors for the Latino Cultural Center (LCC) at Purdue University
  • Embajadores generate awareness of Latino Culture and LCC by creating/designing/planning programming, promoting civic engagement and solving real community based problems
  • Connecting with students on campus who are interested in Latino cultures and the initiatives of the LCC
  • Representatives who assist with circulating information about the LCC, its programs and services
  • Student leaders

Requirements

  • Be a registered Purdue student in good standing with the University
  • Maintain a 2.5 overall G.P.A. or higher
  • Actively participate
  • Attend the Latino Leadership Retreat at the beginning of each semester
  • Commit at least one hour a week of volunteer service to the LCC
  • Attend meetings (biweekly general meetings and committee meetings)
  • Complete a two-page reflection paper at the end of the year
  • Passion to contribute and celebrate Latino/a Cultures!

Committees

Committees are established to engage the membership in the work of Embajadores, to meet the organization objectives, and to develop leaders.

Recreation & Health:

The responsibilities of this committee are to promote, create, and direct recreational and health conscious events to establish a stronger sense of community and belonging among Latino students at Purdue. Additionally, this committee is committed to inform the campus on health issues facing Latinos. Activities included are lectures by healthcare professionals, sporting tournaments, and various activities that celebrate culture and unity through health-related events.

Community Outreach:

The responsibilities of this committee are to organize, plan, and direct mentoring programs with local high school students in order to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation of Latinos in higher education. Along with the mentoring program, the members of this committee conduct educational tours of the center and serve on many panels that provide outreach.

Culture & Art:

Culture & Art seek out ways to enhance appreciation and understanding of Latino culture and art. This committee coordinates cultural programs throughout the school year and sustains ongoing programs such as Día de los Muertos.

Social Justice:

This committee promotes civic consciousness and responsibility by coordinating events that inform and educate about Latino perspectives on current events and social justice issues. Examples of past events are an immigration panel, DREAM act information session and an online blog. http://socjustlcc.blogspot.com/

Communications:

Committee members compile, produce, and organize a Newsletter with a circulation of approximately 1,500.The newsletter is called El Pulso.
