He is credited with resuscitating the Boilermaker football
program, bringing the roar back to Ross-Ade, and even coining
the ubiquitous "Boiler Up." So it should come
as no surprise that Joe Tiller inspired the larger-than-life
legion known as the Jumboheroes. The date was November
18, 2000, and the Boilermakers had moments before clinched
a Rose Bowl berth and Big Ten championship and kept the
Old Oaken Bucket in West Lafayette for another year after
beating Indiana 41-13. As he surveyed the Ross-Ade throng,
an uncharacteristically emotional Joe Tiller gestured to
his team and told the 65,000 celebrants: "These
guys are my heroes." He was whisked away to address
the assembled media, but as the fans frolicked on the field
in the glare of the Jumbotron on that chilly November night,
the Jumboheroes
were born.
