Red Mackey Society Honors Gifts of a Lifetime

Red Mackey Society logoSince its inception in 2006 the Red Mackey Society has begun to grow in popularity as a way to support Purdue Athletics. Over the past 12 months, numerous John Purdue Club members have joined the Red Mackey Society through deferred gifts such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and bequests, to name just a few. As the Red Mackey Society is further developed, members will have the opportunity to be specially recognized alongside others who share their commitment to providing for the future of Purdue Athletics.

Below is an example of how a couple might impact future Purdue stud
ent-athletes by helping Purdue Athletics through a bequest.

Nancy and David are dedicated and long-time John Purdue Club members. Over the years, they have given steadily and have seen the impact their giving has on the lives of Purdue’s student-athletes. They want to create a legacy to provide future support that will last well beyond their lifetimes.

David: Purdue Athletics has always been important to us and we provided support every year with small current gifts. But we wanted to do more. We received information about the Red Mackey Society and noted that we could make a much larger gift from our estate. Knowing we could have an impact on the athletics program even after we were gone was important to us.

Nancy: When we met with our attorney to revise our wills, we each included a provision for a bequest. Our attorney put language in the wills that allows a percentage of our estate to be directed to Purdue Athletics. This was easy to arrange and permits us to continue using our assets during our lives if we need them. We will continue to make gifts during our lives, but it feels good to know that our support will continue to help well into the future.

The language below shows just how easy it is to have a bequest included in your will:

Bequest of Cash
“I bequeath the sum of $10,000 to The Purdue Foundation, Inc., West Lafayette, IN, to be used for the benefit of the Purdue University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the Director thereoof shall determine.”

Bequest of a percent of the estate
“I devise and bequeath 20% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located to to The Purdue Foundation, Inc., West Lafayette, IN, to be used for the benefit of the Purdue University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the Director thereoof shall determine.”

Contingent Bequest
“If my brother, John Doe, survives me, I devise and bequeath 20% of the remainder and residue of property owned at my death, whether real or personal, and wherever located to John Doe. If John Doe does not survive me, then I devise and bequeath 20% of my residuary estate, whether real or personal property and wherever located to to The Purdue Foundation, Inc., West Lafayette, IN, to be used for the benefit of the Purdue University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the Director thereoof shall determine.”
