Purdue Memorial Union's annual Summer Concert Series will kick off July 9 and will feature an assortment of musical styles and a wide range of cuisines.
The four concerts, offered at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday from July 9 to July 30, will take place on the front lawn of Purdue Memorial Union. The concerts are free and open to the public.

Purdue helps Indiana companies stay 'lean and clean'
Purdue University's Clean Manufacturing Technology Institute at the Center for the Environment will offer free workshops to teach Indiana businesses ways to increase efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
The workshops are offered through a program funded by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Comedian Lewis Black to perform at Purdue's Elliott Hall of Music
Stand-up comedian Lewis Black will perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 7 in Purdue University's Elliott Hall of Music as part of his Comedy Central Live "Let Them Eat Cake" tour.
Purdue's Student Concert Committee is presenting the performance, which is produced by Live Nation.

Acoustics and engineering meet biomedicine in novel symposium
American and European experts in acoustics and bio-engineering will present novel approaches on the emerging biomedical field of audible acoustic measurements and analysis during a Sept. 8-9 symposium at Purdue University.
Breakthroughs in the field of sonic measurements and analysis are leading to new medical treatments in critical care; heart-related issues; sleep disorders; orthopedic and sports injuries; ear, nose and throat maladies; hearing problems; and speech disorders. The conference will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Martin C. Jischke Hall of Biomedical Engineering.

Pulitzer winning journalist Thomas Friedman to speak at Purdue
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Thomas L. Friedman, the foreign affairs columnist for the New York Times, will speak at Purdue University on Sept. 19 about his upcoming book "Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution - and How It Can Renew America."
Friedman, whose talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the Elliot Hall of Music, has reported on the current Middle East conflicts, the end of the Cold War, U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy, international economics, and the worldwide impact of the terrorist threat. The College of Engineering - including its Division of Environmental and Ecological Engineering, Global Engineering Program, and School of Mechanical Engineering - has partnered with the Center for the Environment, Energy Center, Office of the Provost and Purdue Climate Change Research Center in sponsoring his speech and related activities that week.

High energy prices bringing revolution to American agriculture
Demand for biofuels, grain and farm land is driving a revolution in American agriculture, a Purdue agricultural economist says.
Wallace Tyner says the demand for corn to use for ethanol production means farmers are transferring more land from other land uses into corn production. Even larger corn crops will be raised for ethanol production until the federal goal of 15 billion gallons of ethanol by 2015 is reached, he says.

Consumer empowerment, education critical to future health-care system
Improved information technology will give patients a greater role in deciding their health-care options, but it also will create challenges, says a Purdue University science expert.
Jeffrey S. Vitter, the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science, says part of the problems associated with health care come from patients having to deal with an ever-changing system that is difficult to understand.

Purdue student earns scholarship for study in Jordan
Emily Dawes, a Purdue senior studying history in the College of Liberal Arts, has earned a scholarship to study Arabic in Jordan.
Dawes of Columbus, Ind., was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research. She will be learning intermediate level Arabic in Amman, Jordan, through Aug. 17 at the Qasid Institute for Classical and Modern Standard Arabic.

2 Purdue students, 1 alumnus receive Fulbright scholarships
Two Purdue University students and one alumnus have been awarded U.S. Student Fulbright scholarships for travel abroad during the 2008-09 academic year.
The Fulbright recipients include Shruthi Rajashekara of Carmel, Ind., Rebecca Conley of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Nathan Shippee of Frazee, Minn. Rajashekara earned a bachelor's degree in biology in May. Conley is a master's degree candidate in Spanish and Shippee is a doctoral candidate in sociology.
