Date Rape Drug Risk Simulation

This activity is a date rape drug risk simulation. Students are involved in a party-like scene where they are provided alcohol-free cocktails, known as "mocktails," to drink. Unknown to the participants, some of the drinks have been slipped fake date rape drugs to demonstrate how easily a drink can be contaminated. Drink recipes and program suggestions are included below.

The Feminists for Action group at Ball State University used a portion of their INCSAPP mini-grant funds to collaborate with several other groups on campus to present a sexual assault prevention intervention for freshman during the week they moved into the residence halls.

At the start of the program, residents were given "mocktails" (non-alcoholic margaritas, pina coladas, and daiquiris). The residents were unaware, however, that some of the cups contained jelly beans representing common date rape drugs, such as rohypnol, GHB, or ketamine. As the participants drank their drinks, some of them discovered the jelly beans, prompting a discussion about how easy it can be for perpetrators to slip drugs into drinks without their victims noticing. The facilitators of the program then led an interactive discussion about sexual assault and alcohol and/or other drug use. At the end of the program, the residents were given brochures on the topic to take with them.
