Indiana Campus Sexual Assault
Primary Prevention Project

Policy

Having a campus sexual assault policy is important to the safety and well-being of students. The policy should include clear definitions of sexual assault and steps to take if a student has been assaulted. The policy should provide information such as support services, methods of reporting the assault, and information on judiciary action.

The National Institute of Justice’s 2005 report, “Sexual Assault: What Colleges and Universities Are Doing About It” discusses weaknesses in campus policies and how they may be addressed.

Safercampus.org includes a list of what makes an effective sexual assault policy. The website also offers a manual on how students can improve their school’s sexual assault policy. The manual is available upon request.
