IN-MaC and Ivy Tech Community College have launched a program to partner on developing their additive manufacturing capability. An exciting component of this new partnership is led by Tong Jin “TJ” Kim, Associate Professor of Industrial Design in the Department of Art & Design at Purdue University. Professor Kim is developing a “Wonder Lab” at the Indianapolis RUCKUS, a collaborative Maker Space being developed in Indianapolis’ Circle City Industrial Complex. Ivy Tech will provide some of the staffing needs at the Wonder Lab as part of a collaborative effort with IN-MaC to develop Ivy Tech’s 3D/Additive Printing capacity, equipment, human talent and curriculum.
The Wonder Lab offers unique opportunities for Academy to Community and Industry Engagement. Faculty members and students will connect to community members and industry professionals through variety of workshops and activities. The lab will be open to Ruckus members to use but there will be training workshops offered to community and industry members. Ivy Tech staff and faculty engaged in the IN-MaC funded “Additive Manufacturing Capacity Development” program will help staff the Wonder Lab. Building a platform and lab outside school, close to our community, provides a great opportunity for academic faculty and leaders to demonstrate the value of their research for our community and industry improvement.
See Exponent article for background on Professor Kim’s work with 3D printers and community development. He started a similar project in Korea this summer.
The joint Ivy Tech/IN-MaC funded project to develop Ivy Tech’s 3D/Additive Printing capacity, equipment, human talent and curriculum is led by Nathan W. Hartman, Ed.D., Dauch Family Professor of Advanced Manufacturing and Associate Head, Computer Graphics Technology, Purdue Polytechnic Institute and Vearl D. Turnpaugh, Associate Vice President – Applied Engineering and Technology Education, Ivy Tech Community College. This program provides matching funds to support Ivy Tech faculty training, curriculum development, and acquisition of several Stratasys Polyjet 3D printers. Expected outcome of this project includes an articulation agreement with the Computer Graphics Department of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute and joint grant writing between Purdue and Ivy Tech.
We hope you can join us for this exciting and educational workshop!
