About the Program

Supported by the Deans of the Colleges of Consumer and Family Sciences, Education and Liberal Arts and the Vice President for Human Relations, representatives from these Colleges and the Diversity Resource Office have coordinated the Diversity in the Classroom Project (DICP) since the Fall Semester of 2002. The goal of the DICP is to facilitate faculty development in "teaching to diversity" (using classroom practices to create a climate that is welcoming of the diversity of our students) in support of the University's Strategic Plan objective of "enhancing human and intellectual diversity." The purpose of the Diversity Fellows Program is to provide support for faculty development, implementation and sharing of inclusive approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment in the area of diversity.

Diversity in the Classroom

The Diversity in the Classroom project focuses on teaching to diversity and teaching diversity with strategies that align with institutional and discipline-specific goals to enhance the human and intellectual diversity environment for student learning. A collaborative and interdisciplinary initiative, Diversity in the Classroom workshops and discussions have provided opportunities for sharing best practices and articulating diversity-centered classroom practices and curriculum approaches.

Objectives of the Diversity in the Classroom project are to provide leadership for scholars to discuss inclusive approaches to teaching, learning and assessment, to increase knowledge and skills about the interaction between diversity across disciplines, and to create a common language used to inform and improve methods to teach to diversity and teach diversity at Purdue University.

Goals of the Diversity in the Classroom project are to create student diversity competencies in behavior and intellectual abilities through classroom practices and curriculum development.
