Head of Metadata Services (002020-2008)

Purdue University Libraries seek an energetic and innovative librarian to join the Libraries as Head of Metadata Services.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will specify and coordinate the application of appropriate descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digitized and born-digital context managed by the Libraries. This position will develop strategies for metadata interoperability.

Social and Behavioral Sciences Information Specialist (002019-2008)

Purdue University Libraries seek an energetic and innovative librarian to join the Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Library and serve as the liaison to the departments of Sociology and Psychological Sciences.

Responsibilities:  Seek opportunities to develop the collections and to provide excellent service to constituents in the departments of Sociology and Psychological Sciences.  Work with other liberal arts librarians to develop interdisciplinary programs related to the social sciences; develop and present specialized classes and workshops that incorporate data-rich informational sources as well as traditional databases into the instruction program.  Provide research assistance and participate in the Libraries’ system-wide digital reference service.

W. Wayne Booker Chair for Information Literacy and Professor of Library Science (001967-2007)

Purdue University Libraries seeks a creative, innovative, dynamic, and experienced candidate to serve as the charter W. Wayne Booker Chair for Information Literacy.  The Chair will provide leadership for the Libraries’ teaching and learning mission internally, University-wide, and beyond.

Responsibilities:  Reporting to the Associate Dean for Learning, the Booker Chair will conceptualize and facilitate the Libraries system-wide information literacy agenda, coordinate the assessment of teaching methods and learning outcomes, and spearhead the Libraries’ research agenda in the areas of instruction and learning.  Consistent with appointment at the rank of full professor, will participate in interdisciplinary research and dialogue with regard to information literacy.  It is desired that the candidate have experience with grant writing and utilizing funding from external sources.

Information Architecture and User Experience Specialist (Posting #001816-2007)

The Purdue University Libraries seek an energetic and innovative professional to provide leadership as it moves through a period of transition in its approach to web content and services.  This position is a 3-year term appointment with the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities:  Collaborate with Library faculty and staff, and external consultants, to develop an information architecture for the Libraries’ new website.  Apply principles of information architecture and usability to develop effective site interfaces and navigation structures.  Collaborate with library faculty and staff to develop new web-based information resources and services.  Develop written tutorials, training materials, and other documentation to support use of the website.  Work with other staff in the Information Technology Department to develop a robust website infrastructure.  Provide a seamless web environment and integrate various library applications and services.  Report to the Associate Dean for Information Technology.

Resource Development Librarian (Posting #001798-2007)

Requirements:  Reporting to the Head Librarian, this 12 month tenure track position provides guidance in the development and assessment of all the Management & Economics Library collections and provides reference services to the Krannert School of Management.  This includes selecting and assessing the collection priorities for materials in all formats and serve as the primary liaison to Management, Economics, and Agricultural Economics departments and other academic centers affiliated with the Krannert School.  Work with appropriate Library units including the Information Technology Division and University Copyright Office to ensure compliance for new and renewed electronic resources.  Manage the materials budget and work collaboratively with other librarians, vendors, and other organizations to determine how best to provide access to resources needed at the Krannert School of Management.  The Management & Economics Library has an extensive historical economics collection and in collaboration with the Head of Archives and Special Collections, continue to develop and preserve this valuable collection.  The Resource Development Librarian will also participate in research and reference service activities to promote the Library’s strategic initiatives.

Qualifications:  Master’s Degree in Library or Information Sciences (ALA-accredited or equivalent).  The successful candidate will possess at least two years experience relating to collection development activities in both print and demonstrated knowledge of methods for evaluating and assessing library collections to meet the needs of library users; have an understanding of trends and activities relating to new developments in scholarly communication, demonstrated knowledge of usage for assessment, acquisition and license agreement processes, experience working in a collaborative environment both inside the library and other campus units or academic libraries and consortia; Enthusiasm for new methods of disseminating information.  Interest in the application of current and emerging technologies to meet the changing needs of users.  Candidate must also demonstrate a strong service orientation utilizing excellent communications skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students.  At least two (2) years of academic library experience.  Knowledge of and/or experience in business librarianship or an undergraduate degree in business or economics.  Familiarity working with data sets and the acquisition of data.  Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution.

Processing & Public Services Archivist (Posting #001797-2007)

The Purdue University Libraries seeks an experienced archivist to oversee reference services and accessioning and processing archival and manuscript collections.  Three year appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor of Library Sciences. 

Requirements:  The Processing and Public Services Archivist arranges and describes archival materials in all format; develops and documents processing plans for large collections and guidelines for levels of processing; ensures appropriate archival housing for collections; identifies and refers items as necessary for conservation treatment; prepares and edits finding aids and other descriptive access tool; participates in implementation of EAD for encoded finding aids; participates in the creation of MARC catalog records for manuscript and archival holdings.  Trains and supervises the work of support staff and students who may be assigned to assist with arrangement and descriptions of manuscript and archival collections; assigns tasks and monitors pace and direction of work by support staff; maintains schedules and deadlines; provides reference services and delegates reference inquires to support staff as appropriate; evaluates staff performance.  Provides instruction to classes in archival research methodology and provides orientation tours for groups visiting the Archives and Special Collections.  Participates in unit-wide planning and committee activities and creating exhibits.  As Archives and Special Collections grow, the Processing Archivist may also assist in future development of records retention schedules and work with the University’s colleges, schools, and departments on the transfer of historical material to the archives.  Reports to the Head of Archives and Special Collections.

Qualifications:  Master’s Degree in Library or Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited library school with a concentration in archival management or completion of significant graduate level course work in arranging and describing archival collections in a historical or academic repository; familiarity with DACS, APPM, EAD, MARC, LCSH, AACR2, and other LC cataloging standards; familiarity with automated library information management systems, such as Endeavor/Voyager and online union catalogs such as RLIN or OCLC; knowledge of basic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript collections; experience supervising staff in processing archival collections; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively , both orally and in writing; excellent organizational skills, with demonstrated commitment to accuracy and attention to detail; experience providing reference services for archival materials; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team environment; ability to work efficiently to meet project goals and deadlines; ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff students, donors, and the maintain professional and effective working relationships with colleagues, faculty, staff, students, donors, and the general public.  Ability to lift records cartons which weight up to 50 pounds.  Experience using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.  Familiarity with current trends in archival theory and management, and records management in an academic setting.  Strong commitment to the archives profession.  Candidates should possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of constituents.  Certification form the Academy of Certified Archivists is preferred.  Familiarity with CONTENTdm or similar digital assets management systems preferred.  Familiarity with digitization projects and archival standards and best practices relating to digital image capture and metadata creation preferred.  Familiarity with HTML and Dreamweaver software for creating or editing web pages preferred.  Knowledge of institutional repositories as they relate to archives work preferred.  Experience managing and providing long-term access to electronic records and born digital content preferred.  Experience providing library instruction preferred.

Diversity Fellows (Posting #001566-2006)

The Purdue University Libraries Diversity Fellowship Program is seeking three committed, early career library and information science professionals to become partners in leading a transformation of academic librarianship which (1) actively engages librarians as integral partners in collaborative, interdisciplinary research, (2) champions the development of pedagogically sound and innovative learning environments that foster critical thinking, and (3) integrates information literacy into the higher education curriculum and community engagement initiatives.  The two-year fellowship provides a broad-based awareness of foundational principles and practices in academic research librarianship as well as specialization experiences.  This program is open to recent graduates of accredited library and information science master’s degree programs who are interested in developing their skills to serve diverse library user populations.

Requirements:  Participation in a rotation through several libraries/units, based on Fellow’s interests; assists in collaborative planning and assessment of Libraries’ programs and services; develops a cumulative portfolio of all work relevant to program objectives; serves on cross-functional teams; and participates in workshops, seminars, and other professional development offerings, including support to attend national conferences and symposia.  In year two, the Fellow will engage in an in-depth, concentrated experience in an area or areas of specialization, and will develop and implement a capstone project that fosters cultural diversity.

Assistant/Associate Dean for Information Technology (Posting #001557-2006)

The Libraries and the University: The Purdue University Libraries have embarked upon a dynamic new role within the University, emphasizing a closer integration of the Libraries into the academic mission of Purdue.  An administrative re-structuring of the Libraries supports this new direction through the creation of this position, Assistant/Associate Dean for Information Technology, and four other assistant/associate deans: Collections and Information Resources; Learning; Planning and Administration; and Research.  Increased emphasis has been made to advance the Libraries’ information technology initiatives through greater integration of technology into the reference and information literacy programs, as well as creation of greater digital collections and services.  In addition, using emerging information technologies, the Libraries faculty are expanding their research/discovery efforts.  http://www.lib.purdue.edu/

Requirements:  The Assistant/Associate Dean for Information Technology reports to the Dean of Libraries and has the responsibility to enable digital technology efforts and manage information technology operations within the Libraries.  These responsibilities include: manage an operational unit responsible for the production environment of existing digital services; provide leadership for technology-driven processes and services throughout the Purdue Libraries; expand and enhance existing working relationships with Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP) and other information technology units within academic departments and labs; participate actively in the national and international development of information technology applications within academic libraries; serve as a member of the Libraries’ senior management team and contribute to strategic planning, program development and evaluation, budget formulation, and allocation of resources in support of the Libraries’ mission, specifically as it relates to information technology applications; seek funding and collaborative partners within Purdue as well as other institutions to operate, manage, and sustain digital repositories and other technology initiatives.

Qualifications:  Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends and issues in the application of information technology to libraries and higher education; experience in planning for the delivery of information resources in a diverse computing environment; demonstrated ability to work effectively in a matrix environment and to cultivate staff throughout the organization to take responsibility for the support and development of information technology; demonstrated commitment to diversity; evidence of effective communication, interpersonal, analytical and creative problem-solving skills; experience with developing and utilizing funding from outside sources (highly desirable).  Assistant Dean: Appointment as Administrative/Professional -- bachelor’s degree with five years, directly applicable and increasingly responsible experience in academic libraries; or a master’s degree in a related discipline with at least three years relevant experience.  Associate Dean: Ability to meet the requirements for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor, masters degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited program, with relevant experience, or, other terminal degree (masters or doctoral degree depending on the discipline) with relevant experience.  As a member of the Libraries faculty, must meet Purdue requirements for promotion and tenure.

Instructional Outreach Librarian (Posting #001556-2006)

The Instructional Outreach Librarian will add a new dimension to the mission of the Hicks Undergraduate Library (UGRL), extending our services on campus and to the local community and region.  The Hicks Undergraduate Library promotes and active and dynamic learning environment.  A student-oriented staff, a strong teaching and service commitment, and collections in all formats support its primary mission to meet the information needs of novice researchers.  Located in UGRL, the Digital Learning Collaboratory, a joint initiative between the Libraries and Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP), supports the integration of information literacy, technology literacy, and multimedia development skills into the undergraduate curriculum.  The Libraries-wide digital reference service is based in UGRL.  The UGRL staff includes 6 librarians and 15 support staff, plus student assistants.  Faculty status and responsibilities.  Rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Requirements:  Contributes to the overall mission of the Hicks Undergraduate Library (UGRL), with particular emphasis on developing, promoting and delivering effective and innovative instructional services and resources.  Collaborates with faculty and staff throughout campus to effectively integrate information literacy instruction into the University curriculum.  Identifies learning opportunities in the community and the region to engage in outreach initiatives with schools, libraries, community organizations, etc.  Participates in the management of UGRL collections.  Participates in planning and collaborative activities with other campus libraries, including the Undergraduate/Social Sciences and Humanities Cluster.  Reports to the Head, Undergraduate Library.  Members of the Libraries faculty must meet Purdue requirements for promotion and tenure.

Qualifications:  Experience in reference services and/or library instruction.  Demonstrated success in the application of information technologies to support active learning.  Experience with methods for creating goals and objectives to achieve measurable learning outcomes and develop lifelong learners.  Fluent in Spanish language (oral and written).
