Purdue University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost. As chief academic officer of the university, the Provost has key responsibilities for helping Purdue achieve its aspirations for continued excellence. The Provost reports to the President of the university.
Purdue, one of the leading land-grant public universities in the nation, is a comprehensive educational and research institution, and is a member of the American Association of Universities (AAU). With its main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana -- in a community of 125,000 people known for its exceptional quality of life -- Purdue also governs three regional campuses in Fort Wayne, Hammond, and Westville. Statewide, Purdue has more than 70,000 students; 18,000 employees, including 4,300 faculty; a budget in excess of $1.8 billion; and offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through its ten colleges/schools.
This is an exciting time in Purdue’s history: it has just completed a $1.7 billion fundraising campaign, created a major new interdisciplinary research organization (Discovery Park) with new facilities, added 300 new faculty positions, successfully concluded a strategic plan, and welcomed Dr. France Córdova as its new President. The university is poised for another set of initiatives that will be determined by a new strategic plan now being crafted. Further information about Purdue is available at our website: www.purdue.edu.
The Provost works closely with the President in providing overall leadership for the university. The Provost directs the university’s academic programs and oversees the Libraries, the Information technology enterprise, Student Services, and International Programs. Recruitment, hiring, and review of Deans and Department Heads are also among the Provost’s responsibilities.
Qualifications: The successful applicant must have a distinguished record of academic accomplishments commensurate with that of a tenured full professor in one of Purdue’s departments; an understanding of the broad spectrum of academic programs and interdisciplinary endeavors in a major research university; a strong commitment to academic excellence, administrative experience in a complex organization; and a demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity. Experience in strategic planning, program development, and fund-raising are preferred.
Application Procedure: The search advisory committee will begin reviewing applications on December 3, 2007, and continue until the position is filled. Applications should include a letter addressing the applicant’s interest, relevant experience and qualifications, and current curriculum vitae. Applications will be treated as confidential. Nominations or applications should be addressed to Professor Margaret M. Rowe, Chair, Provost Search Committee, and sent to Professor Rabindra N. Mukerjea, Office of the President, Purdue University, 200 Hovde Hall, 610 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2040. Email: rnmukerjea@purdue.edu.
