Hard Drive Vulnerability
To protect private and confidential data from security vulnerabilities files containing this type of data are not to be stored on workstation hard drives (C: drive). Examples include: social security numbers and/or any data protected by GLBA or HIPAA. Business files should be stored (saved) in the proper network file server location (i.e. S: drive, H: drive*). If you are saving confidential/private data to disks or CD's, remember to secure those storage devices appropriately. When you need to dispose or reuse these storage devices that contain sensitive or confidential information, contact the Zone staff for proper cleaning of the data off the device.
Storing files on servers helps to ensure the integrity of the data as there are routine backup procedures and significant security is provided on servers. A local workstation hard drive may not have sufficient security and central backups are not done for hard drives.
If you have questions, please check with your technical coordinator or the zone computer staff. Thanks for taking time to review and move/delete appropriate files from your hard drive.
*The S: drive is used to store all Purdue business related documents. The H: drive is typically used for your resume or personnel documents.
