Life change? See if your benefits should change, too.

Recently you were asked to make your benefit elections for 2016, understanding that no changes could be made after enrollment closed unless there is a qualifying life event (change in family status). Now that open enrollment for 2016 is closed, let’s take a look at what life events qualify and how you would go about changing your benefits should you experience a life change.  

First, it’s important to note that only specific events qualify, including but not limited to birth or adoption, marriage, divorce and death of a dependent.

Next, once a qualifying life event occurs, you are required to report it within 31 days. (This includes adding your sweet new baby onto your medical insurance plan.) If you don’t make the request within the 31-day time period following the family change, you will not be able to make changes until the next open enrollment period.

To record a life event or change in family status, sign on to EBenefits through the Purdue employee portal. Click the EBenefits link in the right column of the Human Resources section. Sign on with your Purdue career account username and password. Click the “My Life Event Changes” tab and follow the steps.

Finally, visit the Benefits website for more details - including a list of all qualifying events - on life event (change in family status) benefit elections.
