Be sure to confirm tobacco-user status during enrollment
Benefits open enrollment is a great time to confirm your tobacco-user status and that of your spouse, if applicable. Remember, a tobacco user is a person who has used tobacco in the past 12 months. This includes cigars, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco or any other tobacco product. You will have an option to select from one of three options via EBenefits as you complete your enrollment:
- Have not used tobacco in the last 12 months
- Have used tobacco in the last 12 months or
- Have used tobacco in the last 12 months, but completed an approved cessation program between Sept. 1 and Nov. 11, 2016.
This year, you are asked to review and confirm your tobacco user status for 2017.Those who have an approved waiver need to pay special attention. Here’s what will happen if you don’t actively enroll and confirm your status:
The tobacco certification status for you and your spouse in 2016 will remain the same for 2017 unless you are currently receiving a 2016 tobacco waiver. If you or your spouse have a current approved tobacco waiver, your tobacco status will default to tobacco-user status. You must show proof of completing an approved tobacco cessation program between Sept. 1 and Nov. 11, 2016, to avoid the $500 per person annual tobacco-user additional premium charge that will apply for 2017.
However, you still will have options throughout the year to receive a partial waiver. If you complete an approved tobacco cessation program by one of the dates below, your additional premium will be waived on all pay you receive in the calendar year on or after the listed waiver date.
- Complete approved cessation program by Feb. 28 and qualify for waiver of the additional premium beginning on April 1.
- Complete approved cessation program by May 31 and qualify for waiver of the additional premium beginning on July 1.
- Complete approved cessation program by Aug. 31 and qualify for waiver of the additional premium beginning on Oct. 1.
