I found every reason or excuse not to quit.  I loved everything about smoking except one thing.  I hated how it would control me.  I knew I had to quit and deep down I wanted to quit.  I always had the gnawing fear in the back of my mind about whether I would quit in time before time ran out.  I decided to attend the "Freedom from Smoking" class sponsored by WorkLife.  I learned that I can be in control of my smoking and I can have freedom from this addiction.  I can make my life easier and peaceful.  I learned the benefits of quitting are unlimited!  The group support I had in the sessions really made the difference for me.  I knew it was not going to be easy and I would have urges, a lot of stress, and a lot of anxiety.  It helped having others around to talk to that were experiencing the same thing.  I love being in control and I love my newfound "freedom" as a non-smoker!

I have been coming to wellness screenings every year since 1995.  I didn't know anything about wellness screenings before coming to Purdue.  It helps to know what my cholesterol is; it gives me confidence and helps me to feel better about myself.  I always tell my wife what I need to do for my health: more exercise, watch my cholesterol, etc. and she always supports me in doing this.  As we get older, it is more important to monitor our health.

From health care products to legal advice, the Elder Care Resource Fair provided me with valuable ideas and suggestions that helped me provide a safe home environment for my mother.  Very helpful!

I took Franklin Covey's Seven Habits for Highly Effective Families and simply loved it! It was a time commitment, but well worth it.  The course helped me focus on the positive in family life so that these become habits. I found my children (ages 13 and 9) were especially excited about family meetings and a family mission statement. The course also taught me to look at things from my children's perspective and appreciate their input and views. How great to have positive re-enforcement in daily family living!

Last fall I noticed the class Active Living Every Day – the real eye catcher for me was the $50 incentive.  I was trying to find some type of motivation to begin exercising and watch what I eat, so I signed up for the class. The class has proved to be a real catalyst for me.  Being  part of a group and setting weekly goals helped keep me honest. At first I was rather slow to get motivated, but gradually I’ve gone from no exercise at all to exercising five days a week.  The class helped me break down some of my barriers to exercise and just do it.  I also discovered that any change isn't considered permanent until you have done it consistently for six months. I reached my six months goal in July, and I’m still exercising five times a week.  I would recommend this class to anyone.

This past year has been an exciting year for my weight loss goals. I have lost 80 pounds, and I am very determined to lose those unwanted pounds! I was so excited to see the nutrition classes from WorkLife Programs.  The class on Menu Planning helped me to choose the right nutrition.  We learned how to read food labels and ways to prepare our food quick, easy and, of course, healthy. The Healthy Weight With Dairy class was also very helpful for losing weight. Thank you, WorkLife Programs. I can't wait for more classes in the future!

Sharon Sturgeon I have a new set of luggage, I am painting the walls, have ordered a new sofa, chair and loveseat, I have bought a “good” perfume…did I hit the lottery?  No…better….I participated in WorkLife Programs’ Freedom From Smoking!  The opportunity was right here on campus, free of charge, and I could attend on my lunch hour.  Even doubting success, (I had tried on my own with the patch) I could find no legitimate excuse not to give this program a try.

The class facilitator was truly a “cheerleader” who guided us, listened to us, NEVER chastised us, someone to share the journey with.  Someone who could anticipate our needs, ask the right questions, and make us look inward. I have now been smoke free for over a year!  I feel better, I smell better and I look better.  I have more energy.  Those are the obvious benefits.   But one I did not expect…I have more confidence in myself, I like myself better, and I feel I can tackle anything now!
