Chumley’s Beerhouse and Grill

122 North 3rd Street in Lafayette

420-9372

Half sandwich and cup of soup or chili.  Choose broth-based soup or chili and low fat ham or turkey on wheat.  Add tomatoes, lettuce, onions, olives or peppers to contribute to your servings of vegetables for the day.

Pizza. Try a couple of slices of BBQ chicken or Veggie Delight, add a side salad and take the rest home for later.

Salads.  Sample the Chumley, Chumley Caesar, Raspberry Caesar or Southwest Chicken for a good helping from the vegetable group. Go easy on the cheese; ask for dressing on the side and you’ve got a great entrée.

Wraps.  Choose a tomato-basil or low-carb tortilla. Lower fat versions include the Chumley, Garden, Chicken or Teriyaki Chicken. Substitute a side dish instead of chips for a small additional charge. Go easy on the cheese; ask for dressings on the side.

Sandwiches.  Select Grilled Chicken Breast, Diablo Chicken, or Grilled Pork Tenderloin for the best low fat versions, or Portabella Melt if you go easy on the cheese. Substitute a side dish for pickle and chips and you’re on your way to healthy lunch fare.

Einstein Brothers Bagels

Entrées and salads. Choose from any of the chicken salads, turkey, tuna, hummus, couscous or corn salad. Try the Jamaican Jerk Entrée Salad or smoked salmon. Or choose a half sandwich with extra vegetables, or half a salad with your soup to get more vegetables with lunch.

Soups. For something warm, choose a low-fat soup, including chicken noodle, chicken and wild rice, minestrone, turkey chili and tortilla.

Bagels.  If you’re concerned about calories and carbs, split a bagel or choose the lower-carb, 9-grain bagel. Low-fat bagels and cream cheese are also available.

Beverages.  Einstein Brothers offers a variety of low-calorie beverages, including iced and herbal teas, non-fat lattes, chai tea latte with skim milk, diet soda or green tea. You might also want to try SpontaneiTEA, a freshly brewed iced green tea with a touch of ginseng and fruit added for a new twist.

Dessert.  Want something sweet and on the go? Fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt and fruit cups are available in the cooler.

By choosing the healthy and tasty options at Einstein Brothers Bagels, eating out doesn’t have to wreak havoc on your good intentions.

La Scala

 312 Main Street, Lafayette

420-8171

Salads.  Try Warm Spinach, Fontina Fruit Salad, Ahi Tuna or Colors of Italy.

Entrées.  Filetto Di Manzo Con Spinaci (beef tenderloin with spinach and tomatoes), Veal Piccata (veal with mushrooms, capers, white wine and lemon) or Bistecca alla Pizzaiola (beef tenderloin in a white wine sauce). Feel like parmigiana? Chef Paco will accommodate special requests and bake, rather than fry, the veal, eggplant, chicken parmigiana.

Pasta.  Check out the Napoli, Lazio, Pollo Oreganato, Capellini al Cruda, Fra Diavalo with chicken or shrimp, Sherri’s Pasta or the Miguel Angelo. Large portions can be halved or saved for dinner.

Pizza.  Keep calories in check by splitting a nine inch pie with a partner. Try the Margherita, Bella, Pizza Bianca E Pomodoro (chicken, cheeses and tomato) or Seafood. Request less cheese to reduce your intake of fat.

Meals come with soup or salad – opt for dressing on the side or a broth based soup for low fat selections. Include a low calorie drink and you’ve got a great lunch with the great taste of Italy!

Panera Bread

300 E. State Street, West Lafayette

746-2400

http://www.panera.com/menu.aspx

Sandwiches.  Try the Garden Veggie, Chicken Salad, Smoked Turkey Breast, or Peanut Butter and Jelly.

Salads.  Good choices include Strawberry Poppy Seed with chicken, Asian Sesame Chicken Salad, Fandango Salad, the Classic Café Salad (dressing on the side) or the fresh fruit cup.

From the Bakery. Consider low calorie, higher fiber Artisan Stone-Milled Rye Bread, Lower Carb Pumpkin Seed Bread, Lower Carb Italian Herb or Nine Grain Bread. For bagels, choose Spinach Parmesan, Nine Grain, Everything or Sesame bagels. Or try the Low Fat Tripleberry Muffin.

Soups. For low fat, higher fiber choices, try the Texas Black Bean and Chicken Chorizo, Vegetarian Black Bean, Chicken Noodle and Garden Vegetable.  But be careful – soups often have a lot of sodium.

Beverages.  Round out your meal with iced green tea, lemonade, water, iced tea or diet soda for lower calorie choices.

Here’s to good eating!

Potbelly's Sandwich Works

111 S. River Road, West Lafayette

743-2993

http://www.potbellys.com/food2.0.html

Sandwiches.  Choose the Vegetarian, Turkey Breast or Roast Beef sandwiches on wheat and opt for mayonnaise and cheese on the side.  Or try a “skinny” option for less bread and carbs. Add extra lettuce, tomatoes or mushrooms for additional vegetables.

Soups.  Choose a hearty vegetable or old-fashioned chicken noodle to cozy up with your sandwich.

Side “Stuff”.  Pretzels, baked chips or even bananas are available as sides.

Beverages.  What you drink can really add up in calories. For low calorie options choose diet soda, water or unsweetened iced tea.

Puccini's Smiling Teeth

300 Brown Street, West Lafayette

746-5000

http://www.puccinissmilingteeth.com/menu.htm

Go easy on the cheese!

Soups.  Try the Minestrone with vegetables or the Pasta Fagole with a good serving of white beans.

Salads.  A Dinner or Greek salad with dressing on the side can be lunch or dinner in itself, especially if you add chicken breast.

Entrées.  Choose spaghetti or angel hair pasta with tomato or meat sauce, basil pesto, pesto chicken, spinach filled ravioli or linguine with clam sauce for a treat. Large portions can be halved, or take part of it home. Low-fat options include veggie lasagna (14 grams of fat) or the chicken cacciatore (8 grams of fat).

Calzones.  Best options are the Queen of Hearts, Greek Garden, or Barbequed Chicken.  Calzones are hearty, so consider splitting with someone.

Pizza.  Pizzas are heavy on the cheese, so supplement it with low fat toppings like artichokes, basil, broccoli, capers, cilantro, eggplant, garlic, mushroom, onions, olives, peppers, pineapple, tomatoes, spinach or rosemary.

Puccini’s will do their best to fulfill your special requests, so be sure to ask!
