Speaker Request

By-invitation offerings

Haven’t been able to make it to a class? Need some different programming for a meeting or event? WorkLife Programs will come to you. Invite us into your department or workgroup for a retreat, staff meeting, or special session. For those who are completing their apples as part of Healthy Purdue 2009, these offerings will help you along the way.

To request a presentation, you can fill out our speaker request form or call 49-45461. All requests will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Please allow sufficient time for scheduling. A two-week lead time is suggested. Unless otherwise noted, groups should have a minimum of 25 attendees.

These workshops qualify for a red apple and are free unless otherwise noted.

  • A Good Night's Sleep - What's counting sheep got to do with the eight hours of sleep you’ve always heard you need? This course will teach you about the stages of sleep, how it works, and what it does for your body. Most importantly, get tips to improve the quality of your sleep.
  • Chocolate: The New Food Group - We’ve all heard – and desperately want to believe – the rumors that chocolate is good for us. But what’s the truth? Learn about the history of chocolate and how it has earned a reputation as a health food. Get the lowdown on what kind (and amount) you really should be eating.
  • Emotional Eating - Ever reached for a chocolate bar when you’re under pressure? There’s a reason for that. Find out what happens to the brain when you’re stressed, and what the nutritional ramifications of the choices you make could be.
  • Financial Learning Initiative - Does thinking about saving for retirement put a knot in your stomach? Let a representative from TIAA-CREF help you navigate your way through the different options for funding your retirement years. You will learn what to consider when thinking about how much money you’ll need, different ways to save, and how to choose what options might be best for you. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to sign up for a one-on-one counseling session with a retirement representative for a personal “check-up.”
  • The FUN-damentals of Stress Management - Discover how humor can and DOES increase productivity – as well as peace of mind – in the workplace.
  • Health Care Consumerism and Health Savings Accounts - Are you a good health care consumer, or do you even know what that phrase really means? Attend this workshop to find out why health care consumerism is so important, and discover some steps you can take to improve yours. You'll also learn about health savings accounts (HSAs) and how they can help you maximize the benefits of your health plan.
  • How to Cut Your Grocery Bill - Even in these tough times, you can cut costs at the supermarket by using strategies that will help you stretch your food dollar, understand bargains and know when to use canned, fresh or frozen foods in your meal planning.
  • Move It and Lose It - So many people feel as if they need to starve in order to lose weight. Fortunately, that isn’t the case. By incorporating two small changes into your daily routine – increasing activity (moving) to burn an additional 100 calories and shaving off (losing) 100 calories from your intake - you can lose weight without punishing yourself by starvation or excessive exercise. Doing this faithfully can help you lose 20 pounds in a year.
  • Self-Care Techniques - Generally, you can recover from an illness or injury without needing special medical care. But how can you tell when it’s time to seek medical care? This class will give you the tools to prevent and treat common health problems, to know when medical attention is necessary, and to select the best healthcare provider for your situation. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of "Healthier at Home," a manual published by the American Institute for Preventive Medicine.
  • Solving the Maze: Using the Healthcare System Wisely - Staff Benefits has developed a new training seminar: "Wise Use of the Healthcare System." This presentation is the first in a three-part series on consumerism in the healthcare industry. This series aims at addressing rising healthcare costs, tightening financial budgets, and understanding different health accounts relevant to employees at Purdue University. It covers important factors related to proper utilization of your current health plan, the difference between the emergency room and urgent care, and key steps that can help you take control of your health.
