Employees and supervisors responsible for following CDL rules

If you supervise an employee who is required to hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) to fulfill the duties of his or her job, here are a few items you should know.

  1. A Purdue University employee must have a CDL to operate:
bullet

A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds.

bullet

A trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds, if the gross combination weight rating is more than 26,000 pounds.

bullet

A vehicle designed to transport 16 persons or more (including the driver).

bullet

Any size vehicle which requires hazardous materials placards

  1. In Indiana, driving a commercial motor vehicle implies consent to alcohol testing.
  2. No one can drive a commercial motor vehicle without a CDL. A court may fine the driver up to $5,000 or put him or her in jail for breaking this rule.
  3. Purdue University may not let an employee drive a commercial motor vehicle if the employee's CDL is suspended or revoked. A court may fine the employer up to $5,000 or put the employer (possibly the supervisor) in jail for breaking this rule.

If you have any questions concerning CDLs, please contact me, Pat D. Russell, in Human Resource Services. I am responsible for the administration of the drug and alcohol testing program for commercial motor vehicle operators. You may call me at 49-40269 or e-mail me using the link provided below.

Last, but certainly not least:
Remember to contact me when you have any personnel changes in positions that require holding a CDL. The Department of Transportation rules necessitate completion of specific paperwork as well as the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
