LeadingEdition: E-newsletter for Purdue University Supervisors

Healthy Purdue needs continued supervisor support

More than 9,000 employees completed a wellness screening and the HealthPath® Questionnaire as part of Healthy Purdue this year, making them eligible to participate in the Wellness Achievement Incentive. Participating employees will work toward completing five wellness criteria before November 9, and supervisor support can have a significant impact on their success.

Lending your support to employees is simple. Here are some suggestions. Supervisors can:

bullet

show the online version of the "How to Complete Wellness Criteria" presentation on the Healthy Purdue Web site to faculty/staff during a meeting on their computer/projector or encourage employees to view the presentation at their own computer.

bullet

encourage employees to attend a "How to Complete Wellness Criteria" presentation, offered over the lunch hour in Stewart Center. Go to the WorkLife home page and complete online registration to attend

bullet

invite WorkLife Programs to give a presentation on "How to Complete Wellness Criteria" to faculty/staff in their department or area.

bullet

print out the PDF file of "Wellness Criteria" from the Healthy Purdue Web site and hand out copies to employees.

bullet

offer support of the initiative by encouraging faculty/staff participation.

bullet

take part in Healthy Purdue opportunities, share experiences and benefits of participation, or model how to participate.

bullet

help employees with access to computers for online program options.

We encourage supervisors to work with employees to help with scheduling and staffing so participants can attend workshops/programs that give them credit for the wellness criteria. Helpful efforts are to make arrangements to stagger staffing or alternate work coverage to give employees opportunities to take part.

When the recorded health awareness workshops are available online, supervisors can encourage their employees to view a presentation at their own computer, or make a computer available for employee use. To get credit for viewing the presentation, participants must take the corresponding quiz.

This summer, supervisors can request that a WorkLife Programs workshop – which qualifies as one of the five wellness criteria apples – come to their department or area. Further information will be available in the summer brochure.

Beyond increased awareness of their personal health and wellness, employees who complete the Wellness Achievement Incentive will also receive $250 before taxes, credited to their paycheck in early 2008. Supervisors can communicate to employees that Purdue is taking an active interest in employee health – one with tangible rewards.

The Healthy Purdue initiative promotes employee health and productivity. Wellness criteria offer opportunities for our employees to focus on their health and take part in a variety of activities that help them be healthier and more productive at work. The result is a healthier, more productive worker, which all supervisors can appreciate. Supervisors, employees, and Purdue University all benefit from this initiative.
