H1N1 pandemic flu information for supervisors

With the beginning of a new school year and the return of faculty, staff, and students to campus, supervisors should keep informed about the H1N1 flu virus, and take proactive steps in the workplace to prepare for this situation.

• Periodically check the University's Pandemic Web site for the latest information and links to news, information, and guidance related to the H1N1 virus.
• Staff members who are ill should be encouraged to stay at home and not return to the workplace until they are fully recovered and no longer contagious.
  • If you observe an employee in the workplace who appears ill or unable to perform assigned work, you can direct the employee to go home. It is important that you consult with your Human Resources office before taking this type of action.
• Purdue staff can take up to 10 days of accrued sick leave per fiscal year to care for family members.
• Encourage your staff to follow good disease prevention tips, including hand washing, using the shoulder to cover the mouth if coughing, receiving annual flu shots, etc.
• Identify any essential staff in your work area who would be required to report to work if normal University operations were suspended, and communicate to these staff members so they understand their responsibilities.
• If staff members are not currently enrolled in payroll direct deposit, encourage them to enroll so they can avoid waiting on a payroll check that may be delayed or unavailable if normal University operations are suspended.
• Finally, consult with your Human Resources office for assistance and guidance in dealing with H1N1 related issues in the workplace.
