About the program

Benefits-eligible employees have the opportunity to elect additional accidental death and dismemberment coverage, known as Personal Accident Insurance (PAI).

PAI provides protection against losses due to accidental death and dismemberment. The plan covers accidents on a 24-hour basis. This protection is offered in addition to the $15,000 accidental death and dismemberment coverage provided for you by the University as part of the term life insurance.

** In the event that you or an insured dependent dies as a result of a covered accidental injury while driving or riding in a private passenger car with an air bag, you will receive an amount equal to 10 percent of the amount of insurance in effect on the date of the accident up to a maximum of $12,500 if the official accident report verifies that the person’s seat belt was properly fastened.

Who may be covered

If you cover yourself with PAI, you may cover your eligible dependents. If your spouse or same-sex domestic partner (SSDP) is employed at Purdue and eligible for benefits, you may both elect PAI coverage on one another and on your children.

The choices

  • Employee: May select coverage in $10,000 increments, up to the lesser of 10 times the employee’s annual budgeted salary or $250,000.
  • Spouse: Coverage is available in $10,000 increments up to $100,000, but not to exceed the employee’s amount of PAI coverage.
  • Children: May be covered for $10,000.

More detail

Benefits are payable as long as the loss occurs within 90 days after the date of the accident. However, losses due to quadriplegia, paraplegia, and hemiplegia must occur within 365 days of the date of the accident.

You will receive the proceeds of any benefits payable due to the death or dismemberment of any covered dependent, as well as from any dismemberment you experience.

Proceeds resulting from your death are payable in any manner you specify in your beneficiary designation. Contact your Business Office, regional campus Human Resources office, or Staff Benefits for a beneficiary designation card if you don’t already have one on file or if you need to change your beneficiary designation.

Additional provisions

This section briefly outlines several additional benefits payable under the PAI coverage. More detailed policy information is available from Staff Benefits.

NOTE: “Insured dependent” and “insured spouse“ refer to a dependent who has PAI coverage in effect at the time of the accident.

  • Coma

In the event you or an insured dependent becomes comatose as a result of a covered accidental injury, additional monthly benefits may be payable if the individual:

• Becomes comatose within 90 days from the date of the accident, and

• Is continuously comatose for at least six consecutive months

The total amount paid will not exceed the base amount of coverage.

  • Exposure and Disappearance

Benefits will be payable according to the benefit payment schedule for losses resulting from unavoidable exposure to the elements. Additionally, benefits will be payable for loss of life when the insured individual’s body has not been found after one year.

  • Tuition Reimbursement for Dependent Spouse

In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with tuition for a licensed professional trade school training program for your insured spouse if he or she:

• Has enrolled in classes within 30 months of the accident, and

• Has enrolled for the purpose of obtaining an independent source of support and maintenance.

Expenses must be for tuition or the cost of training materials.

  • Tuition Reimbursement for Dependent Child(ren) Under Age 23

In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with tuition for higher education for each insured dependent child under age 23.

  • Day Care for Dependent Child

In the event of your death, additional benefits are available to assist with dependent day care expenses for insured dependents under the age of 7 years. The insured dependent must have been enrolled in a licensed day care facility on the date of the insured parent’s death or must enroll in a licensed day care facility within 90 days following the date of death.

  • Felonious Assault

If you experience a loss as a result of a felonious assault, your benefit payment for the loss will be increased by five percent.

  • Return of Remains

This additional benefit for return of remains only applies if the covered person suffers a loss of life while outside a 150-mile radius of the person’s home. The benefit will be the lesser of $2,500 or the actual expenses to return the person’s body home to the United States or Canada. Covered expenses include expenses for embalming, cremation, coffin, and transportation of remains.

  • Critical Period Payment

In the event of your death, your insured spouse (covered under you as an employee) will be entitled to an additional benefit during the first 12 months following your death.

  • Common Accident

If you and your insured spouse both suffer a loss of life as a result of the same accident, an additional benefit is payable. The amount payable is the difference between the amount of coverage on the employee and the amount of coverage on the dependent spouse.

For example, if you are covered for $250,000 and your spouse is covered for $100,000, your spouse’s benefit will be increased by $150,000, bringing it to $250,000.

  • Dependent Child’s Covered Loss

If your dependent child suffers a covered loss, other than loss of life, the amount payable on behalf of the insured child will be doubled.
