Benefits by Job Type

This reference guide provides an overview of the benefits available to Purdue employees, based on their staff classification.  These benefits apply to faculty and staff in any of the following categories:

  • Administrative, professional, continuing lecturers, clerical and service staff employed one-half time or more on a continuing basis for more than one year.
  • Tenure track faculty employed one-half time or more for more than one year.
  • Visiting/temporary faculty veterinary interns, and post doctoral research associates/assistants employed full-time for a semester or longer.

In this guide, all benefits are in abbreviated form.  Additional details can be found in the Policies and Procedures Manual for Administering Graduate Programs, Graduate Student Employment Manual, and Executive Memoranda B-36, 48, 50, 55 and C-7, 9, 13, 14, 20, 26, 31, 32, 38, 40, 45, 46, 48 and University Policies IV.10.1 and IV.10.2.  For benefits applicable to adjunct, associate, affiliate and visiting scholar staff members, refer to Executive Memorandum C-12.

Notes Regarding Eligibility  

1.    Visiting faculty appointments are defined as employment for a period of less than 24 months. To be eligible for insurance programs, visiting faculty must be employed full-time for either the spring or fall semester.

2.    Faculty and staff must be employed at least half-time for more than 12 months to be eligible for benefits. Research faculty appointments must be employed for at least one semester (academic) or five months (fiscal) to be eligible for benefits.

3.    Graduate student staff and graduate administrative and professional staff in West Lafayette are eligible for graduate student accident insurance.

4.    Short term disability is offered only during annual open enrollment.  Clerical and service staff members with one year or more of service are eligible to participate.

5.    Employees who have vested, employer-funded contracts from previous Higher Education employment are eligible for immediate TIAA/CREF participation.

6.    Cooperative Extension Service agents participate in TIAA-CREF if hired after 1/1/84.  Employee who have vested, employer-funded contracts from previous Higher Education employment are eligible for immediate TIAA/CREF participation.

7.    Non-resident aliens on an F-1 or J-1 visa may be exempt from Social Security.  Contact the Payroll Department.

8.    You are eligible for FMLA leave if you have been employed by the University for at least 12 months, consecutively or non-consecutively, and have worked at least 1,250 hours during the 12-month period preceding the date FMLA leave commences.

9.    Purdue employees who are eligible for benefits may take a maximum of seven credit hours per semester (four Summer credit hours).  Refer to Executive Memorandum C-7.  Purdue Staff must be employed half-time at the start of the semester and be expected to work more than a year.  Staff must work at least six weeks into the semester to be eligible for tuition fee reductions.

11.  Teaching Research and Administrative appointments (except Residence Hall Counselors) at the West Lafayette campus, who are appointed half-time or more are eligible for subsidized graduate staff medical benefits.
