Purdue Spouse Coverage and Opt Out Medical Options

"Purdue Spouse Coverage" Option

If you and your spouse both work at Purdue and are eligible for benefits, you may elect to opt out of medical coverage and be covered as a dependent on your Purdue spouse's medical plan. If one of you is in the higher employee premium tier and the other is in the lower tier, you will need to enroll under the spouse who is in the higher premium tier.

Couples can elect separate coverage and do not need to enroll together. When choosing individual coverage, each of you will be charged based on your own contribution tier.

"Opt Out" Medical Option

If you have other coverage available to you, you may elect to decline medical coverage through Purdue. You must have other coverage to be eligible to opt out.

Since Jan. 1, 2014, the Affordable Care Act – commonly known as Health Care Reform or Obamacare – has required everyone to have health care coverage or to pay a fine if they don't have coverage. Individuals can get the required insurance through an employer plan (such as Purdue’s plans for benefits-eligible faculty and staff, or a spouse’s employer plan), through a government program (such as Medicare or Medicaid) or through insurance they buy on their own.
