Sponsored Internship and Study Abroad in China

The Sponsored Internship and Study Abroad in China program combines study abroad, professional training and cultural experience in a 6-month program (mid-May through November) at one of several five-star luxury hotels located in China.

In the past, interns have been placed at these properties:

  • Crowne Plaza Harbour City (Shanghai)
  • InterContinental Hotel, Nanjing
  • Jinling Hotel, Nanjing
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao
  • Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou
  • Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan (Taiwan)

InternParticipants earn 12 credits hours, including two credits of HTM30200 (HTM Internship), four credits of HTM3900 (Undergraduate Special Problems), three credits of HTM39800 (International Special Topics), and three credits of HTM39900 (Special Topics in HTM). The program fee for 2014 was $8,004. The rate is subject to change each academic year based on current Purdue university tuition and program fees.

HHS students who meet the University's general study abroad requirements are eligible to apply.

Students are encouraged to submit a formal application at the beginning of the fall semester. On average, 12 internships are available each year. Offers are usually made within six weeks of receiving the application.

The program is financially supported by corporate sponsorships that provide funds for international airfare, room and board, stipends and other benefits. The total value of corporate support is $32,400 per student sponsored.
