Beyond the Classroom

Student Organizations

There are several student organizations for SLHS majors that provide opportunities for the enhancement of academic, cultural, and social aspects of student life.

Awards

Each year, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences nominates one senior to receive the College of Health and Human Sciences Outstanding Senior Award. The department begins the nomination process by selecting a small group of seniors who are eligible for the nomination based on GPA (3.8 or higher) and academic achievement. Each eligible senior is invited to submit an application that will assist the selection committee in making its decision.

Each year, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences nominates one senior to receive the Professional Promise Award. This departmental award recognizes those SLHS seniors who, through their academic, leadership, and service performance have demonstrated the greatest promise as future clinicians and researchers in the field of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. Although solid academic performance is important for this award, its emphasis is on students’ contribution to the community and service to others through their chosen professional path.

Clinics

Undergraduate students in the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences department have opportunities to learn about the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology through observing and volunteering in the campus clinics.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Conducting research as an undergraduate is a unique opportunity to be part of Purdue's world-renowned research and offers an important advantage to those planning to pursue a graduate or professional degree. Undergraduate research also provides a practical way to explore a career in speech, language, and hearing sciences research.
