MS-SLP Academic Advising Checklist

Pre-requisite minimums

one course in the physical sciences 
one course in the biological sciences
two course in college alegbra (or higher), (including statistics)
two courses in behavioral/social sciences

3 semester credits in normal anatomy & physiology for speech and hearing (SLHS 304)
3 semester credits in acoustics or normal phonology (SLHS 302)
3 semester credits in linguistics or normal language development (SLHS 309)

3 semester credits in statistics (PSY 201, PSY 500, STAT 501, SOC 382 or waiver approved by the Graduate Committee)
3 semester credits in aural rehabilitation other than sign language (SLHS 450)
3 semester credits in hearing disorders and hearing evaluation (SLHS 460)

6 additional credits from the above areas or speech/language disorders (SLHS 306, SLHS 449 etc.)

Graduate Program minimums

SLHS 521: Phonological Disorders (3 cr)
SLHS 523: Language Disorders: Principles and Preschool (3 cr)
SLHS 531: Language Disorders in Adults (3 cr)
SLHS 529: Stuttering (3 cr)
SLHS 532: Voice Disorders (3 cr)
SLHS 501: Neural Bases of Speech and Hearing (3 cr)
SLHS 502: Fundamentals of Speech Production and Perception (3 cr)
SLHS 539: Dysphagia (3 cr)

9 credits of electives in speech or language disorders (Up to 6 thesis research credits may be applied to this requirement if the content is approved by the Graduate Committee)

SLHS 519: Aging and Communication (3cr., fall 1st 8 wks)
SLHS 540: Augment. & Alternative Communication
SLHS 518: Counseling in SLP & AUD
SLHS 537: Dev Motor Speech & Feeding Disorder
SLHS 524: Communication Disorders in Infancy
SLHS 536: Traumatic Brain Injury
SLHS 538: Motor Speech Disorders
SLHS 544: School Clinical Methods
SLHS 550: Rehabilitative Audiology for Adults (2 cr., summer) 
SLHS 551: Pediatric Aural Rehabilitation

3 credits of electives in a related area but not communication disorders (3 thesis research credits may be applied to this requirement if the content is approved by the Graduate Committee)

SLHS 509: Language Acquisition
SLHS 519B: Hearing Science
SLHS 519R: Clinical Instrumentation
CDFS 565: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Aging (3 cr. fall)

Enrollment in SLHS 549 (or 648/649) every graduate semester

Pass comprehensive examination or defend thesis
