Entrepreneurship - LACTOR

Azza AhmedAzza Ahmed, Assistant Professor of Nursing

Azza H. Ahmed, Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing, in collaboration with Mourad Ouzzani of the Cyber Center and Ali Roumani of the Bindley Bioscience Center, have developed and upgraded LACTOR. LACTOR is an interactive web-based breastfeeding monitoring system. The system has two main components: the Mothers' Portal where mothers enter their breastfeeding data and receive notifications; and, the Lactation Consultants' Portal where lactation consultants can monitor mothers' data. The system recognizes patterns of mothers' responses that indicate breastfeeding problems. LACTOR sends automated immediate feedback to the mother, provides suggestions to solve the problem, and alerts the lactation consultant. This creative breastfeeding monitoring measure begins after hospital discharge, makes efficient use of clinicians' time, and keeps the lactation consultant aware of what is happening with mothers. This research Study has been funded by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and Indiana CTSI-CTR.
