Double Majors in Nutrition Science

Students in Nutrition Science may pursue a double major within Nutrition Science. A second major can be added during STAR (Student Transition & Registration) in June/July before the freshman year, or anytime thereafter. Adding the second major as early as possible is critical for course planning. Students are encouraged to talk with their academic advisor as soon as possible so that a plan of study can be developed that includes both majors.

Popular Combinations

Any of the Nutrition Science majors can be paired together for a double major. Likewise, any major in our department can be paired with any other major offered at Purdue. Popular example pairings have included:

Nutrition and Dietetics (DPND)

  • Nutrition, Fitness and Health (NFHL).  The Nutrition Science Department at Purdue has a unique and historically popular double major offering in Nutrition, Fitness and Health (NFHL) and Nutrition and Dietetics (DPND). This combination allows students to fulfill the didactic (DPD) requirements for becoming a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), as well as gain a comprehensive approach to human health and fitness. This double major is 127-135 credits and can be completed in 4 years.
    • Sample Degree Requirements & Plan of Study for Nutrition & Dietetics/Nutrition, Fitness & Health (DNFH)
  • Nutrition Science (NUSC). Paired with Nutrition and Dietetics (DPND), the Nutrition Science major is an increasingly popular choice as a double major. The combination gives students the opportunity to fulfill the science requirements for most graduate or professional school (e.g. medicine, dentistry, physician assisting, physical therapy) applications. Or, students can obtain a position in research.
  • Foods & Nutrition in Business (FNBS)Students gain knowledge & training in food science and business. This combination is particularly good preparation for a consumer liaison, business or sales position in the food & nutrition industry.

Steps for choosing and declaring a second major

STEP 1:  What are your career goals and interests? What area in the field of nutrition science are you passionate about? Do some research on the majors in which you have an interest as a secondary major.  Decide if pursuing a second major will help you reach your career goals.

STEP 2:  myPurdue Plan can be very helpful for determining how many credits are needed towards a second degree plan. In the Worksheet tab in myPurdue, click on “What If” and select the degree you are considering adding to your Nutrition Science degree to review the course requirements.

STEP 3:  As early as possible, discuss your interest in a double major with your academic advisor. Some double majors or dual degrees can be finished in 4 years with careful course planning and commitment to some summer coursework, while other combinations require more time.
