Track: Dual degree

Ola Wasel

Tell us about yourself:

I am a biochemist by training, biotechnologist by my first master’s in stem cells, and currently a toxicologist in the making.

Why pair a MPH degree with your PhD/MS:

In addition to pursuing an environmental MPH, I am working on a MS in environmental toxicology. I find studying public health policy and methods of intervention and prevention quite align with my toxicology research. I work on assessing the developmental toxicity of metals. The life cycle of ubiquitous metals is a public health concern.

Why the extra degree affected your research and course load:

At Purdue, I find interactions with public health faculty to be immensely rewarding. The course load adds an extra year but given its relevance and what it prepares you for, it is quite worth it.

Your vision:

I aim to be an effective toxicologist, bridging the gap between clinical/lab findings and public health policy. Working in compliance and enforcement is very appealing to me.
