Track: PhD + MPH

Why pair an MPH degree with your PhD:

I was interested in the broad perspective the program brings to health problems. I was primarly attracted to the potential impact public policy may have on the health of millions of people. I strongly believe that pairing my PhD with an MPH degree provides context to my research. It further broadens my understanding of cancer prevention and the realistic application of cancer prevention practices. So far, the program has been a great fit for me. I particularly enjoy the interactions I have with my fellow MPH students and the discussions we have on topics concerning public health policy.

Why the extra degree affected your research and course load:

Adding an MPH degree to my studies has definitely increased my workload. However, the insight I gain from my MPH classes has provided me with a better understanding of how basic scientific research can be translated into effective public policy. I also find it valuable that many of my MPH classes focus on writing and effective communication, which is a skill necessary for both a public health professional and scientist.
