Track: PhD + MPH

Kelly Higgins

Why an MPH degree with your PhD:

I chose to pair my PhD with an MPH because of the real-world application and extension opportunities. I am an advocate for science communication and making food and nutrition information readily accessible to the general public. What good is research if it never makes its way to the public or impacts policy?

How the MPH degree complements your research:

Scientific research requires focus on one specific topic, which for me is the role of low-calorie sweeteners on body weight, energy intake and appetite. The public health curriculum takes a step back to give the big picture, allowing me to theorize how my research may affect society.

Your vision:

I plan to pursue a career in policy development, specifically in the realm of domestic and global food security. A PhD and MPH will provide me with the technical research and health initiative development skills for success.
