Master of Public Health Program (MPH)

Welcome and thank you for visiting our website!!
We are very excited about the Public Health Program at Purdue University. The Master's in Public Health degree is offered by the Department of Health and Kinesiology, one of nine units in the College of Health and Human Sciences, in collaboration with numerous faculty, academic departments and Colleges on the Purdue campus.
Our current MPH program offers a concentration in social, behavioral and community health sciences. This concentration focuses on identifying and analyzing the social determinants and behavioral risk factors that are associated with public health problems and using this knowledge to understand and promote healthy behavior within communities.
A core belief of social, behavioral and community health science scholars and practitioners is that disease is socially produced. Thus, the mission of our program is to foster an understanding of public health as embedded in particular social, cultural, economic, and political contexts. The Public Health faculty engage in research and practice that contribute to the development, administration and evaluation of programs and policies in public health and health services to promote and sustain healthy environments and healthy lives for individuals and populations.
The social, behavioral and community health sciences public health program, founded in 2004, is an academic home for:
-
Conducting research to understand and describe the psychological, behavioral, social, cultural and policy factors that affect health;
-
Using state-of-the-art methods to identify, analyze and translate findings into educational and behavior change programs promoting positive health outcomes; and
-
Providing training to the next generation of social and behavioral health practitioners, educators and scientists.
We strive to train scholars and practitioners to identify and analyze the major social, cultural, and bio-behavioral determinants of health and health behavior and to design, implement, and evaluate social and behavioral interventions and social policies aimed at improving community and population health. Students work closely with faculty in our program, the department and across the university to study strategies for promoting health and preventing disease. Through classroom instruction and personalized mentorship by dedicated faculty and applied research internships, students gain the skills needed to make meaningful, independent scientific contributions to public health.
The Public Health program provides bachelors (BS) and masters (MPH) level training in social and behavioral health and doctoral (PhD) training in various areas of health promotion. We encourage you to further explore our website and contact any of the public health faculty members to help you explore opportunities in our program.
