Master of Science in Pedagogy and Administration

Program Overview

The Master's degree program in Pedagogy and Administration is designed to provide knowledge related to effective instructional and/or administrative practice in professional and other situational contexts. The program is designed as either a terminal degree or a foundation for Ph.D. study. For a printable version of this page - click here.

Recreation and Sport Management Option

The Recreation and Sport Management option is offered as a thesis-based program designed to prepare the M.S. student for:

  • a managerial-level position in a recreation, sports, or leisure-services organization
  • a research-related position in a recreation, sports, or leisure-services organization
  • continued study at the Ph.D. level in a recreation/leisure-studies or sports-management program
Required Courses:
  • HK 524: Managing Health, Fitness, and Sports Organizations (3 credit hours)
  • Research methods course (3 credit hours)
  • Graduate statistics course (3 credit hours)
  • Marketing course (3 credit hours)
  • Legal issues course (3 credit hours)
  • Advisor-approved electives (9 credit hours)
  • Master's thesis (6 credit hours)

Faculty Mentors

  • Dr. Bill Harper (research interests -- philosophy and history of sport, play, and leisure; the relationship between technology and leisure)
  • Dr. David Klenosky (research interests -- decision making behavior in leisure, sport, and tourism settings; recreation and sports management)
  • Dr. Tom Templin (research interests -- physical education pedagogy; socialization of teachers across the lifespan)

One of the following "marketing" courses:
  • HK 525 Marketing and Promotion in Health, Fitness, and Sports Organizations (3 credits)
  • HTM 531 Hospitality and Tourism Marketing II (3 credits)
  • HTM 631 Strategic Marketing in Hospitality and Tourism (3 credits)
One of the following "legal issues" courses:
  • MGMT 455 Legal Background of Business I (3 credits)
  • EDFA 621 Legal Issues in Higher Education (3 credits)
One of the following "statistics" courses:
  • STAT 501 Experimental Statistics I (3 credits)
  • STAT 502 Experimental Statistics II (3 credits)
