Research Interests:
Dr. Klenosky’s research focuses on the study of decision making and place visitation behavior in recreation, tourism, and sports settings. Drawing from his background in marketing and consumer behavior, his earlier work centered on examining the key factors impacting decision making behavior in these settings. Over the last 11 years, Dr. Klenosky has been exploring the unique issues and considerations involved in studying and promoting recreation behavior in diverse urban/metropolitan settings. One project in this area investigated the impact of negative or degraded environmental features (industrial structures, odors, and noise) on recreation site choice decisions for selected recreation activities – golf, fishing, and birdwatching – activities chosen for their relevance to efforts to reclaim land for recreation use in post-industrial settings. A second project relied on the analysis of secondary data to explore patterns in the recreation and travel behavior of urban racial/ethnic groups in Chicago, Illinois. And a third project investigated activity patterns, past visitation behavior, and recommendations of places to visit and avoid for a range of Chicago-area recreation sites (i.e., sites believed to be attractive to visitors, sites considered relatively neutral, and sites that felt to be relatively less attractive). Most recently, Dr. Klenosky has been working with a team of social scientists and recreation planners to better understand the ramifications of transforming the former Freshkills Landfill located in Staten Island, NY into a new urban park, Freshkills Park. At 2,200 acres, the site was one of the largest and most active landfills in the world. The site is now the focus of a 30-year phased development project. When completed the former landfill will include reclaimed wetlands, recreational facilities and landscaped public parkland; and will be the largest expansion of the NY City parks system in over 100 years. Dr. Klenosky and his team have conducted focus groups and resident surveys to better understand attitudes toward and intentions to visit Freshkills Park among Staten Island residents. This effort will provide important baseline data, which will serve as a foundation for documenting the degree to which behaviors and attitudes have changed during the park’s evolution.
Dr. Klenosky’s research has been published in a variety of outlets including the Journal of Business Research, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Leisure Research, Annals of Tourism Research, Journal of Travel Research, Journal of Tourism Studies, Tourism Analysis, Tourism Management, Journal of Sport Management, the International Journal of Sport Management, and the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. He is currently an Associate Editor for Leisure Sciences and the Journal of Travel Research.
